There are many available job prospects for Apprentices throughout Australia with a wide variety of positions available to potential job seekers. An apprenticeship is a great way to enter the workforce by learning a trade that can set you up financially for life and give you a lot of job satisfaction. There are many available trades out there for school leavers to take up, some more common ones are Electrician, Plumber, Boilermaker and Hairdresser.

There are some personal requirements to take up a trade with the most important being a willingness to learn and also the applicant must be punctual. Learning a trade consists of 4 years on the job training and part time study. The apprentice works four days a week with 1 day set aside each week to attend a course.

Salaries for first year apprentices are usually very low and vary depending on what trade the apprentice is involved with. Pay scales are structured with the minimum amount paid for the first year with an increase each year of the 4 years of the apprenticeship. After completing the apprenticeship most qualified tradesman are paid extremely well.

There are many companies which offer apprenticeships to school leavers be it small or large companies. There is also a shortage of skilled tradesman in Australia so anyone looking to be involved in a trade should find work fairly easily. Apprentices are entitled to leave conditions such as Sick Leave, Annual Leave and Long Service Leave. When working for a company many tradesman are required to take some or all of their Annual Leave if the company closes down over Christmas or at a time which is convenient to the employer.

The big negative when learning a trade is the low rate of pay for first year apprentices. This can be a problem for anyone who is not living at home but renting and paying household bills. Going to Tafe 1 day a week for study is a requirement for becoming a qualified tradesman.

There are lots of possibilities when completing your apprenticeship and becoming a qualified tradesman. Skilled tradesman are in high demand so you should have no problem in finding employment with any number of companies. It is also a great opportunity for any qualified tradesman to start up his own company. If you do want to start up your own company then there could be great financial benefits by doing this as tradesman can charge extremely well for their services. By doing this a tradesman can earn a lot more money than by being an employee for a company.

The downside is that if you are working for yourself then you have the headaches of doing paperwork in the evenings and also finding work to keep you busy. Generally this in not a big problem as there is always a great demand for tradespeople.
